Transfer news, rumours and gossip from Old Trafford from the 2023 January transfer window; the window opened on Sunday January 1 2023 and will close at 11pm on Tuesday January 31

Man Utd transfers

With the 2023 winter transfer window now open, we round up the players linked with moves in and out of Manchester United.

Man Utd remain hopeful of completing Weghorst deal

Manchester United remain hopeful of completing a deal for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst.

There is still work to do to get it done as Burnley and Besiktas need to agree to cut short his loan in Turkey. United are looking at other options if they are unable to complete a deal for Weghorst.

United are also keeping an eye on the right-back position. It has been told they have looked at a number of right-backs including Celtic’s Josip Juranovic but any move is likely to depend on Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Erik ten Hag has been impressed with Wan-Bissaka’s performances since the resumption of the season although the fit again Diogo Dalot started the FA Cup game against Everton on Friday.

Manchester United have spoken to Burnley about signing striker Wout Weghorst on loan.

United are waiting to find out if Burnley can come to an agreement with Besiktas to cut short his loan and if the figures work. It is thought the player wants to make the move to Old Trafford.

Besiktas sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci says any deal will only happen if the club is compensated, otherwise, Weghorst will see out his season-long loan.

Man Utd still searching for forward and right-back

Manchester United continue to assess all options with regard to signing a striker and a right-back.

If a player does arrive in January, it will almost certainly be on loan but there is a significant chance the club will not sign anyone next month.

A right-back is not seen as a priority given the form of Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the return to fitness of Diogo Dalot. Wan-Bissaka has started United’s last four games in all competitions.

One source has told Sky Sports News United have done “due diligence” on a number of players including Celtic’s Josip Juranovic, but the primary focus remains on a forward and a ‘keeper.

A permanent deal in January cannot be completely ruled out but only if a long-term target becomes available, and that spending would form part of next summer’s budget.

As it stands, a loan move is more likely than a permanent deal – if they are to bring anyone in over the January transfer window.

Manchester United have triggered one-year options to extend the contracts of Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Fred to the end of the 2023/24 season.

It is also understood the same action has not been taken for David de Gea’s contract, with the club in positive talks with the Spain goalkeeper about a potential new deal.
