The 2022 summer transfer window slammed shut at 11pm on September 1; Newcastle splashed £123m on new recruits and received nothing from sales; Magpies signed Alexander Isak (£63m), Sven Botman (£35m), Matt Targett (£15m) and Nick Pope (£10m) for disclosed fees
As the 2022 summer transfer window closes, we round up all the done deals and all the players linked with moves in and out of Newcastle during the closing stages.
Newcastle completed the signing of striker Alexander Isak for a club-record £63m fee from Real Sociedad.
The club awaited international clearance to have the Sweden international available for the trip to Wolves but the 22-year-old was not included in the squad – scoring on his debut three days later in a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.
Isak had been at Real Sociedad since the summer of 2019, when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund, and scored 44 goals in 132 appearances – including one in the 4-1 La Liga defeat to Barcelona last month.
Manchester United completed a £2m loan deal with Newcastle to sign goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
The 33-year-old joined United after four years at Newcastle, who he joined from Sparta Prague in 2018.
United’s option over his permanent stay, which will command a further fee of £6m, will become obligatory depending on the number of appearances he makes for the club.
Newcastle also have a recall option they can use in January, if they require.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had been speaking about the latest transfer rumours ahead of his side’s Carabao Cup tie with Tranmere.
Joao Pedro appeared close to joining the club, but Howe, commenting on reports the deal is done, said: “I think that’s not entirely accurate, but I’m not dealing with things minute to minute. I’m in the background hearing what’s happening but I don’t think that’s correct.”
When pressed on other transfer targets, Howe added: “Makes it easier (if I could tell you who we were signing). It’s ever-changing. It doesn’t cause me issues but it causes other people issues. It comes with the territory when you’re at a big club. There’s naturally going to be stories and lots of rumours.
“I’ve learned to ignore it, so I ignore what you write, but I think it’s the best way to be. As long as you know what’s going on internally that’s the main thing. I’m calm on the outside, and at the moment I’m calm on the inside because the team is playing well. But I’d love to add.”
Newcastle United made a second bid for Watford’s Joao Pedro and were hopeful of signing the forward, but Everton also enquired about his availability.
Newcastle’s offer was believed to be in the region of £30m, including add-ons.
Everton were made aware of the offer but reportedly failed to make an official bid of their own.
Watford were considering the proposal from Newcastle, with talks over the structure of the payments and how achievable the add-ons were.
However, the Championship club were under no pressure to sell as Pedro still has three years remaining on his contract. The 20-year-old later released a statement committing to the Hornets.
Leeds rejected a second approach from Newcastle for Jack Harrison. The Magpies made an initial approach earlier in the window and were prepared to pay £19m.
They increased their proposal but the clubs remained miles apart in their valuation of the winger.
Sky Sports News understood Harrison was happy at Leeds and wanted to play regularly to be in with a shout of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.
Tottenham also showed an interest in Harrison during the transfer window.
Newcastle tracked four Chelsea players?
Newcastle had asked to be kept informed about a quartet of Chelsea players – Conor Gallagher, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Armando Broja and Christian Pulisic, according to the Daily Telegraph.
It was believed the four players could be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge before the close of the transfer window. Sky Sports News revealed the Magpies were, indeed, tracking Gallagher’s availability, with other Premier League clubs interested in the midfielder.
In the end, only Hudson-Odoi departed on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, while striker Broja had been linked with a move to Real Madrid and other Premier League clubs, including West Ham.
